The media is often referred as the fourth power in a
democratic society. They play such a huge roll in the mind shaping and
education of citizens, as any other political organ does. There is no doubt
that the power and the way the media reports has a direct impact in a country.
The way the media handles its power may be manipulated
according to their agenda, this may be of political or economical interest.
This is one of the main reasons why it is important to have a wide diversity
within the media landscape.
When a media outlet starts to have tendencies towards any
party side, it’s already a bad indicator of the misusage of its power. It
doesn’t matter if the tendencies are left or right.
Thankfully in todays society, the way we consume news, has changed dramatically
and we currently live in a world where we perceive and consume news in complete
different way that the generation before us did.
Thanks to technology, we get the privilege to nowadays,
customize the news feed according to our personal interest. That means that
this ‘agenda’ is no longer fulfilled, since we get to choose the kind of
reports we consume, so we are no longer glued to one absolute truth that some
major established media channels may report.
The remaining question is if we are now the ones that
control the media, and they report in order to fulfill our need.
