Does the marketplace of ideas and media leave us overwhelmed and disaffected?

Modern media are overflowing with an everincreasing number of so called "news stories" about people whose non existent importance is only undercut by their own miserable sense of shame. These "Stars" only exist for publicity and it is often unknown  what they are even famous for. One example of such an avatar of irrelevance is Kim Kardashian, who is famous for a pornographic video.

Now does this enormous tsunami of stupid lead to an overwhelming amount of input? Does it leave people disaffected by the acually relevant news? The answer is no. While there is definitly too much worthlessness and irrelevance in modern media, the important events still find their way to the population. Further, people are still deeply affected by shocking events that take place. A terrorist attack for example still leads to a mass reponse from people all over the globe. Changing ones profile picture as a sign of unity might be called useless or childish, but it still illustrates compassion and proves that people are still affected.
